5 Secrets to building your own kick ass brand
For the majority of the past 8 years I have been employed by multiple companies and only gone out on my own for small periods of time in between. I have now arrived at the realisation that in the long term I don't want to work for anyone other then myself. I want to be able to commit my time to me and put as much as my energy and resources into myself as I can.
Now why does it always seem so hard when I sit down to work on this blog for instance or my instagram page but when i’m approached by a company and asked to do something it's simple and easily done. Working for yourself is difficult and add in working remotely, it can be pretty tough even though it comes with a plethora of perks.
I put a fair amount of pressure on myself to succeed at anything I set out to do which for the most part has gotten me to where I am today, which is a pretty good place. But a lot of the time, that voice nagging inside my head is a b***h! I think it's that I don't want to end up disappointing myself. Isn’t that the realisation of working for yourself? The only person you let down is you, no boss, manager or CEO relying on you. Just you to reach your own expectations which if you are anything like me are always ridiculously unrealistic.
So this rambling thought process does stem from something, from the fact that this blog and my brand seem so vastly overwhelming to me right now. I am trying so hard to have everything perfect from the get go. To write about the right things, to attract a certain type of audience, to market to a specific niche. How do you do that perfectly at the start of a business and a brand? The fact is you don't and this doesn't just apply to blogging, with any business where you start out and where you end up are two vastly different places as you learn and mould along the way. It’s the exciting part of getting to know your baby. Obviously you have a pretty good idea of who they are but certain things change as you go and learn more about them.
For now though here are some tips i'm trying to practice to stay on the right path and keep myself in check whilst building my brand. These are things that help me stay focused on my purpose, be effective and generally help to keep in mind when you’re also a remote worker.
1 - Block out time
When you start building your own brand you’re most likely still working for another company or maybe like me you're travelling while earning income digitally, either way it is essential to block out time in your day to work on the brand you're trying to build other wise the tasks pile up and it becomes overwhelming. So block out those 2 hours and stick to it!
2 - Stop worrying about what the rest of the world is doing.
That great quote about how “Comparison is the thief of joy” comes to mind. You can not be everything for everyone so just remember why you created your brand or business. Write it down and look at it when your doubting the content you’re putting out.
3 - Be true to yourself and the work will flow. Authenticity goes along way.
I'm a firm believe in having passion for what you do. If you are building a brand or business around something you absolutely love and you keep true to it should flow a lot more easily then forcing something you don’t really want to be communicating. People can also tell when someone is passionate and being authentic and it is an attractive quality people are naturally drawn to.
4 - Put yourself into situations where you can learn from others.
This is something I have learnt over the last month working remotely in Bali and I can't begin to emphasise the importance. I have learnt so much about where I want the direction of my brand to go, how to improve certain things and do things in ways I wouldn’t think of myself. Just hearing other people discuss their brands or passions can spark ideas for you and your brand. The world can be a wonderful place in how it delivers information to you at the strangest times, you just have to be open to receiving it.
5 - Create, create, create because consistency truly is key.
I struggle with this one a lot so it may be a bit hypocritical to write it, but i'm working on practicing it myself. Content is king but sometimes content is also just content. I'm not saying go out and put up tons of half hearted crappy content but consistency is key. In a world where there is so much content for us to ingest and access if you are not constantly top of mind your followers, consumers or audience will move on to the next person. No they are not you, but they will still be able to offer something you can't and that's content. So try push for amazing content but don’t focus so hard on it being perfect that you take to long in between communicating with your audience.
So in a nut shell for now i’m just going to write exactly what I want to write. Nothing overly thought out or curated. I want to be real and raw and if you like me then hey! Great to meet you ;) If you don’t like me and what I choose to write about and focus my brand on, then thats also no problem, the world was made to be diverse and if we all just liked the same s**t life would be real damn boring.
