Hiking in the popular Robberg Nature Reserve, South Africa

Hiking in the popular Robberg Nature Reserve, South Africa

My best friend is here visiting me for a week and i’m taking full advantage of the company. After her first day here of complete beach chilling we decided to get active and go for a hike and what better place then Robberg Nature Reserve just 8kms outside the heart of Plettenberg Bay. I am a big fan of hiking, its one of the activities I started on weekends to escape the daily rush of Jozi.

Robberg Nature Reserve offers three hiking trails:

1 - Gap Circuit which is 2.1km

2 - Witsand Circuit which is 5.5km

3 - Point Circuit which is 9.2km

All the trails start along a beautiful wooden board walk over looking Plettenberg Bay and loop back on the other side overlooking a rocky coastline.

We started a bit later then planned so opted to do the Witsand Circuit. The trail estimated time is 2 hours but because we made multiple stops to absorb the view, take a hundred photos and have a quick dip in the sea, it took us about 3 hours to complete.

I absolutely love this trail because of the endless views it has to offer and the fact that you can stop halfway for a quick dip in the ocean also doesn’t hurt. If you're unfit don’t worry, you can take your time on the slightly more strenuous uphills and the trail offers a lot of benches throughout so you can stop and take a break. The terrain you walk on varies from sand and rock to sand dunes so you need to be able to adapt to walking on the various elements.

On part of the trail there is a seal colony down below the cliff, so you can stop to listen and watch them. (If you don’t mind holding your breath for a while as they do stink a lot!). Many people have also spotted whales, sharks or dolphins in the ocean below, unfortunately on my three times here I haven’t but fingers crossed for the next hike.

Entrance into the reserve is only R40 and also offers some really great picnic tables for those who aren't to keen on the hiking. I would recommend going out of season otherwise the trail can be a bit to busy for my liking. This time of year is perfect as we only saw about 10 other people on the trail which really gives you that sense of being at peace in nature.

Check out their page for more info re the trails as well as the amazing overnight accommodation the reserve has to offer - Robberg Nature Reserve
